CPROST Post Doctoral Fellow Brian Wixted (homepage: http://www.sfu.ca/~bwa11/ ) has recently published a book on the international geography of innovation systems.
Innovation System Frontiers is published by Springer. http://www.springer.com/economics/regional+science/book/978-3-540-92785-3
The dust jacket reads:
Recent economic transformations in the world economy are progressing in two divergent directions – international production fragmentation and industrial agglomeration. Based on extensive data analysis and using models of interdependencies between key economies, this book analyses innovation systems that cross national borders. It is shown that technological complexity is an important factor in the formation of highly specific production networks, and why, for a number of production systems, fragmentation and clustering are two sides of the same coin. By outlining the picture of a world economy structured around networks of clusters and joined together through systems of linkages of components, people and knowledge flows, the author helps to promote a better understanding of recent economic transformations.
Welcome to David Zanvliet! :: CPROST is pleased to welcome our newest member, Professor David Zanvliet, from the Faculty of Education. David brings a strong interest in science education - his PhD from Curtin was in Science and Technology Education - and especially education as relating to the environment.
CPROST turns 20! :: 2009 marks our 20th anniversary since CPROST was established by Dr. William Leiss. There will be a number of events throughout the year (see below) which will help us celebrate. Brian Wixted (wixted@shaw.ca) is doing the organizing. Please contact him if you're interested in helping to organize something or for more information.
Summer course :: CPROST faculty plan to offer a summer course on science, technology and innovation policy. Look under "courses" for details.
Olympics alternative :: If you are not an Olympics fan, you may want to consider our 2010 Field School on Technology, Communication and Creative Clusters that will be held at the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico, in February 2010. There are more details under “courses”.
Leonardo 2009 :: CPROST will host the 2009 Leonardo Institute, a noncredit program for doctoral students that examines the risks, uncertainties, ethics, and art of science applied. See the Leonardo site for more details: http://fas.sfu.ca/leonardo. SFU students interested should contact Adam Holbrook.
TMP. What's that? :: CPROST will organize and host the Technology Management Policy Graduate Consortium. The Technology Management Policy Graduate Consortium prepares our graduates to excel in their technical fields, and to develop and implement effective strategies for dealing with the risks and opportunities associated with those technologies. A paper writing competition is held and a select number of students are sent to the conference. Details here: http://fas.sfu.ca/leonardo/technology-and-policy-program/index_html. SFU students interested should contact Adam Holbrook.
October 5, 2008 :: CPROST researchers have just returned from a very successful "Innocom" workshop in Kananaskis, Alberta. The workshop was attended by approximately 20 researchers from the Western Canadian universities. All are part of the "Innovation and creative clusters" research project from the ISRN research network, based in Toronto. A number of papers were presented, but the three day event (September 30-October 2) was focused on informal dialogue, panel discussions, and planning sessions for the remainder of the research project. Attendees from University of Saskatoon, University of Calgary, UBC and SFU were in attendance. Thanks to Glenda Shaw-Garlock for her amazing organization skills, our hosts from the University of Calgary, the Kananaskis Biogeosciences Research Station staff, and Adam Holbrook.
August 25, 2008 :: Research Impact and Evaluation Workshop - On June 4, 2008 the Centre for Policy Research on Science and Technology (CPROST) hosted a “Research Impact and Evaluation” workshop at Harbour Centre in Vancouver. The purpose of this workshop was to present research and to generate discussion concerning the evaluation of formal research networks. The impetus of this workshop came from work undertaken on a SSHRC Presidential Fund Grant research project entitled "The Evaluation of Formal Research Networks" undertaken at CPROST under the leadership of Dr. Brian Lewis, Prof. J. Adam Holbrook and Dr. Brian Wixted. Details
August 22, 2008 :: CPROST Researcher Florence Chee on research trip to Korea (Fall Winter 2008/2009). Details.
May 5, 2008 :: New report from Wixted/Holbrook: Conceptual Issues in the Evaluation of Formal Research Networks
